Coaches Matter. Conversations Change Lives.

Welcome to Hans' Bender Shop, where we use mental fitness to turn benders into beauties. We've been doing it since 2007.

I'm Hans Skulstad, and if you're on The Coaches Site, I know you're serious about coaching and making a positive impact on your players.

I've spent more than 20 years working with hockey players at every level, from elite athletes to kids who simply love the game. I've learned a lot from the conversations I've had in my office, with teams, coaches, and parents. My goal is to share those lessons with you.

Here are two things I know for certain.

1. Coaches matter.

You have an incredible responsibility and opportunity to shape the lives of your players. Your impact doesn't end when they hang up their skates. Someday, your athletes may become coaches themselves, passing along the lessons they learned from you.

Think about that. Your impact can last for generations.

2. Conversations and words matter.

The best coaches use conversations to create connection, trust, awareness, and confidence.

Conversations create culture. They help athletes understand themselves, learn from failure, navigate pressure, and develop the skills they need to succeed in hockey and life.

But here's the thing. Great conversations aren't always comfortable.

Sometimes they require vulnerability. Sometimes they require challenging what you've always believed about coaching.

Do you know when to push your players and when to back off? When to listen instead of talk? When to challenge an athlete to see something in themselves they can't yet see?

That's where mental fitness comes in.

Through the Bender Shop, I'll share practical tools and lessons from years of working with athletes and teams, including how to:

  • Get comfortable being uncomfortable.

  • Forgive yourself, let go, and focus on the next play.

  • Learn from failure and setbacks.

  • Build small, smart habits that create an edge.

  • Develop values, identity, and confidence that hold up under pressure.

  • Create conversations that connect your team and build a stronger culture.

Being a great coach requires the courage to adapt, evolve, and keep learning.

My hope is that these conversations help you become the kind of coach who doesn't just develop better hockey players, but better people.

Because the impact you have today can change someone's life tomorrow.

Be a transformative coach. Let's change the conversation.

And speaking of impact, I've included a YouTube link in the comments to one of my favorite stories about the lasting influence a coach had on a Hobey Baker Award winner. It's a story I've told a thousand times, and it never gets old.
