Corner Attack Rim Drill
This drill is designed to help players practice retrieving a puck off the boards, protecting it, and cutting past the coach's hands while advancing towards the net.
Description
Arrange two lines along the boards as illustrated, with two players positioned in each corner.
At the whistle, the second player (P2) sends a puck into the oposite corner where P1 is stationed, initiating the drill.
The first player (P1) collects the puck from the boards and drives towards the net, all while protecting the puck from the coach who is providing minimal resistance on the way to the net.
After completing their turn, P1 moves to the end of the line, P2 takes their place along the boards, and P3 sends in a new puck.
Key Points
The offensive player should initiate contact with the coach defending and work to move away from the boards while cutting past the coach's hands on their way to the net.
The coach should apply light pressure to allow the forward to practice this move. Coaches can gradually increase the level of defense, ensuring they keep their stick on the ice at all times, and work to angle and prevent the player from reaching the net.
Half Wall Rim WIth Shot Drill
This straightforward yet impactful drill that aids players in honing their ability to retrieve pucks from the boards. This drill is emphasizing crucial techniques such as shoulder checking, receiving passes along the boards, and advancing towards the goal.
Description:
Position players at the blue line as shown
At the sound of the whistle, a player skates around a cone and proceeds down the boards to collect a puck rimmed by the coach.
The player swiftly gathers the puck, moves off the boards, and takes a shot on goal
Key Points:
Ensure players perform a shoulder check before receiving the rim pass to stay aware of any approaching pressure.
Encourage players to advance the puck towards the goal, employing deceptive maneuvers like step fakes around the pylons.
Begin with cones and gradually introduce pressure from coaches and then from other players to simulate game situations, challenging players to execute the skill with urgency.
Net Front Rim Recovery
Description
Position players at the blue line along the boards facing the zone acting as the strong side defense. Begin with a player positioned near the strong side post. On the whistle, a player at the blue line sends a puck behind the net. The player in front of the net retrieves the puck and initiates the cycle by advancing along the half wall. After the initiating player executes a strong side dive, the net front player passes the puck for a quick shot. The player who dumped the puck then moves to the front of the net, while the player who just took the shot rotates out.
Key Points
The player collecting the pucks along the boards should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings, shoulder checking as they retrieve the puck (add a coach or another player to apply mild pressure for a more realistic simulation). The player moving in from the point must communicate, informing their teammate of their position, and should aim to take a quick shot. Once the players are accustomed to the drill, introduce a scissors maneuver and a high roll involving the player at the blue line.
