Zig Zag Chaser is a great drill for getting players to use crossovers in a competitive way. Have players push each others speed but encouraging them to keep pace with one another.

Description

Coach draws lines on the ice to indicate starting points.

Players line up behind the line on both sides.

On the whistle first player (O) leaves and zig zags in the zone in any pattern they want. Using their crossovers to move from side to side.

The next player in the line (X) leaves and tries to follow the same pattern that O has made.

Once the players reach the far side the player that was the leader returns to line. And the player that was the follower becomes the leader in the other direction.

The drill repeats in the other direction.

Key Points

Have players focus on bending the ankle to maintain contact with the ice on the outside edge.

Encourage players to listen to their outside and inside edges as they cross over.

Players should be trying to maintain a low stance throughout the entire drill.
