DRILLS & PRACTICE PLANS

Turn and Pass - Pivot

Turn and Pass helps players receive a pass while moving. Players should be performing their pivot so that they are facing the passer.

Description

Coach draws lines on the ice to designate starting point for the players and places 2 cones in front of the line and a cone near the top of the circle.

Players line up in the corner.

First player skates with a puck and turns around the first cone. They then make a pass to the next player in line.

Player keeps skating turning to the wall and receives a puck back.

After receiving the player passes to the coach and performs a pivot skating backwards towards the middle of the ice.

Once past the last cone the coach passes back to the player and they move towards the net for a shot.

Once the first player receives the pass form the coach then the next player may go.

To practice backhand passes have the players pass on their backhand to the coach.

Key Points

Ensure players use proper passing technique:

  • Using heel of stick
  • Push and pull with hands
  • Follow through with bottom hand

Side puck handle:

  • Top hand out
  • Puck beside the players skates

Back of shoulders should lead the pivot towards the cone and the direction of the movement while backwards.

Encourage the players to receive the puck on the goal side of their body.

Do drill in both directions.
