As the architect for many of the NHL’s best shooters, Tim Turk has been focusing on shooting and scoring for a long time and he’s got the client base to prove it.
What makes Turk great is his care and attention to detail in every player's shot. Something that he has found in the best shooters is their ability to get their hips back when taking a shot. A specific shot that Turk focuses on is shooting while in stride. In most situations a player will have no more than two seconds to get a shot off. Being able to shoot while still in stride is an area of the game that can be taught in practice. When a player shoots in stride, it is important that they generate power by getting low and forcing their hips back. To do this, Turk encourages his players to get their inside leg back behind them in his shooting drills. This movement when shooting results in a player forcing their chest and shoulders to go forward.
Getting his players to think about their shooting mechanics is the goal in Turk’s shooting drills. The next mechanic that Turk highlights is in a player's arms. In shooting drills, Turk preaches to his players to get their bottom hand fully extended and directed at their intended target. With a player's top hand, Turk wants his players to focus on getting their elbow up and higher. By having his players get their hands out away from the body, the player can generate more power and accuracy in their shot. These are fundamental skills that Turk teaches and enforces in a player’s game, especially in shooting situations when a player is dragging a puck closer into their body to change their shooting angle.
Putting his players in unique situations allows his players to grow and gain strength in their shooting and scoring ability. Turk’s drills focus on activating different muscles used in shooting the puck and that helps generate power to a player's shot. A big thing that Turk wants for his players during training is to think through their shooting process. Taking the time in practice to think through the mechanics of shooting will allow a player to build strong shooting habits leading to more scoring chances and goals.
