Sling Shot Pivot is a drill that advances backwards skating and edge control. Encourage players to keep their chest up and keep hips under shoulders.

Description

Coach sets up 2 cones at the top of the drill

Players start on the goal line.

Coach directs player to go.

Player skates hard to gain speed then pivots into a glide backwards at the cones.

The player then completes 2-3 crossovers backwards as they move to the second cone.

Once the player gets around the second cone they return to line forwards.

Key Points

Reinforce skating stance techniques:

  • Hips down
  • Chest up
  • Shoulders back

Reinforce crossover technique:

  • Inside shoulder up
  • Hips under shoulders
  • Look in the direction of skating
  • Push outside edge under body

Back of shoulders should lead the pivot towards the cone and the direction of the movement while backwards.

Ensure you do drill in both directions.

To increase difficulty spread the cones out wider apart or progress to single circle pattern.
