Lateral Crossover Starts and Stops helps teach players how to use their edged to control their stops. Have players bend their ankle to get on their outside edge.
Description
Coach draws 3 lines across the circle about 6 feet apart.
Players line up on the goal line in 2 lines.
First player in each line starts by facing the same direction. On the whistle they will perform 3 lateral crossovers before coming to a stop.
They then repeat this on each of the lines. Once completed they will skate back to their original line along the outside of the drill.
Players need to practice using their outside edge in 3 progressions
- T-Stops (outside edge behind)
- One foot
- Punch stop (outside edge in front)
Key Points
Load edges with pressure by bending knees and dropping hips slightly.
Ankle bend on foot making the stop so that skate is on outside edge.
Use leg strength to push down on the ice and scrape.
Encourage players to make snow by stopping.
