The Current State, and Future Trends, in Sports Analytics

Staying on top of current and future trends in sports analytics is an everyday battle.

Thomas Finholt, the Dean and Professor of Information at the University of Michigan, spoke at TCS Live in 2023 on the past, present and future of sports analytics. If ever there was a presentation that could educate coaches on the importance of using stats, and how artificial intelligence can help on a daily basis, this is it.

During this 28-minute presentation, Finholt, who joined the school in 1991 as an assistant professor in the department of psychology and from 1997 to the present has worked in the School of Information, examines three areas of importance in coaching: what a coach sees, what the cameras see and what the data says - the three rarely align with each other!

Watch as Finholt explains the importance of using data to understand practice scripts, volume versus intensity in practices, the role Chat GPT plays in all of this, including to generate code used inside an integrated development environment, and how to use box score stats to predict wins.

Be ready to take a lot of notes during this educational presentation!
