Coaches who attended TCS Live 2023 were introduced to the “Constraints-Led Approach” by Ken Martel, Senior Director of Player and Coach Development with USA Hockey. While the concept can sound complicated at first, Martel does a great job breaking it down into something every coach can apply immediately.

Few people in hockey are better suited to teach the topic.

Martel, a former defenceman at Lake Superior State University, brings more than 25 years of experience in player development and coach education. Throughout his time with USA Hockey, he has helped shape modern coaching philosophies across North America and has become one of the leading voices in game-based learning, decision-making, and practice design.

A lot of the language coaches hear today around small-area games, adaptable decision-making, and creating game-like environments has been influenced by leaders like Martel who have helped bring these ideas into mainstream hockey development.

At TCS Live 2023, Martel demonstrated the Constraints-Led Approach through a series of handball-style mini-games using coaches from the audience. As he adjusted different constraints within the games, the behaviours of the participants changed right in front of the crowd.

He manipulated:

• playing area size
• number of players
• scoring systems
• movement restrictions
• methods of scoring

As those constraints changed, communication increased, movement patterns shifted, and players adapted their decisions based on the environment around them.

That is the foundation of the Constraints-Led Approach.

The central idea is that skill development emerges through the interaction between:

• individual constraints
• environmental constraints
• task constraints

Instead of prescribing every movement, coaches can design environments that naturally guide players toward discovering solutions and making better decisions under pressure.

One of the biggest takeaways from Martel’s presentation is that every drill encourages certain behaviours while discouraging others. The challenge for coaches is to step back, observe what is actually happening inside a drill, and adjust the environment to create the habits and decisions they want to develop.

Since TCS Live 2023, Martel has continued leading conversations around modern player development and coach education through USA Hockey and speaking engagements across the hockey world. As more teams move toward adaptable, decision-based training environments, the concepts discussed in this presentation have only become more relevant.
