Some of the most important drills are also the simplest, and it takes real coaching skill to recognize them. Let’s talk about point shots.
Offensive defencemen at every level have a knack for getting shots through from the point. It’s not just the superstars like Cale Makar (who have their own arsenal for creating offence from the blue line), but, for lack of a better term, regular players too. Every defenceman wants to contribute offensively, and with repetition of the right habits, they can.
Tyler Dittmer’s on-ice presentation at TCS Live is a great example of this kind of habit. Simply point your toes in one direction while shooting in the other. Seems simple, right? That’s because it is. It’s a deceptive maneuver that’s tough for opposing forwards to read, let alone block.
Pay special attention to the terminology Dittmer uses during this drill. It’s a fun way for players to get reps, and because it’s a bit out of the ordinary, it quickly becomes addictive. Goalies have a tough time with their reads as well.
