Mike Johnston's presentation at TCS Live is a masterclass in turning a crucial skill into a game-like situation. It was so convincing that coaches had to squint at the start to see how this offensive zone play drill was disguised as a passing drill.

For Johnston, strategies can't exist without the ability to execute the skills required within them. It's simple, but it's true. Coaches can plan the most elaborate systems they want, but if players can't complete a tape-to-tape pass, it doesn't matter.

This progression is a fun way for your players to work on their passing, and it will expose weaknesses in a hurry. This is a good thing. It means you get to coach the players and help them with their hands, their posture, and their giving and receiving skills.

Description

  • Run a 5-on-0 play in the offensive zone you want
  • Regroup in the neutral zone
  • Run quick ups, D-to-Ds, hit the middle, and so on

Key Points

  • Forwards: hustle out of the zone and work hard to support the puck, regardless of the regroup
  • Defence: when retrieving the puck, make sure to scan and take a snapshot behind you
