Practice Plan: Better Puckhandling, Better Shooting

I'm a big believer in linking skills together in practice. It's not as common to shoot from a standstill in a game, than it is to catch a pass or carry the puck into the zone before letting it fly. So it stands to reason that the action that precedes the shot can be as important as the shot itself.

Put another way, if you're ever begging your team to shoot more, consider the steps needed to get into a spot to shoot. Can't shoot from the D-zone. Shouldn't shoot from the neutral zone.

So how do we get there? We move the puck either by passing it or carrying. Systems and structure have a role to play, sure, but without good passing and puckhandling your team is going to spend all its time in its own zone.

And we want our players to shoot like Tim Turk. Turk has been a friend of TCS for awhile, and I had the pleasure of working with him directly in 2024 in Ann Arbor before we collaborated on a course, Mastering the Fundamentals of Shooting. His shooting mechanics are somehow as simple as they are complicated. They're all designed for anyone, of any age, to master. It takes a lot of reminders, but that's why we have you, right?

Here's a practice plan designed to literally move from stickhandling to passing to, finally, a shooting position. Most of the skill elements required are taken straight out of Turk's course, which you can check out here: Mastering the Fundamentals of Shooting
