The team buzzed through the warm up drill- legs and hands are warm, this is a perfect time to use the full ice and work on some 2v2's and 1v1's. Why? Because they players are starting to get a bit fatigued from a high pace warm up. Mistakes happen when players are fatigued and this is an excellent opportunity to help coach them through reads and decisions while they start to get a bit tired.
Here are three 2v2 and 1v1 drills to draw up to start practice after the warm up drill.
MCLEOD 1V1
Drill runs out of both ends at the same time.
D1 skates from corner to top of circle, pivots backwards for 3 strides reading pressure then pivots and skates hard behind net to pick up puck. F1 leaves corner up wall, D1 hits them with a pass then skates to centre ice.
F1 skates full speed up ice, passing to D2 in far corner who goes cross ice to F2 who one touches to open ice for F1 to pick up.
F1 goes 1v1 on D1 (both ends).
D1 starts drill again as soon as shot is made.
FINLAND 2V2
Fast paced drill. Should be done at OVERSPEED.
On whistle, Defencemen skate backwards to pick up puck, they turn up ice and feed F who streaks down ice at full speed for shot (make sure shots are staggered).
D have sprinted to Centre to gap up. Coach feeds far forward and they come down 2v2. As soon as the 2v2 has crossed the blueline, the next D pair step up.
Drill goes on whistle.
USA CONTINUOUS 2V2
Drill starts on whistle.
D1 moves feet, passes to F1.
They go 1v1 down ice. Once shot has been taken, D2 passes to F2 who one touches to D1. D1 and F2 go 2 on 1 on D2 with F1 backchecking.
D2 then becomes the offensive defenceman going back the other way making it continuous.
