This is a very simple Forward Skating Body Position (spine angle) drill.

Players are flipping their stick over and holding it laterally across their body.  They will do this pushing only one leg and gliding with the other leg. Their thought should be to push outside of the end of their stick and push their leg from their hip to maximize extension.

The players eyes are looking over top of their stick and down the ice. This intially sets up a good spine angle for players to think about as they are skating.

Common Errors -

1 - players will extend their arms holding their stick.

to fix - have players relax their elbows and bring the stick closer to their body.

2 - players eyes will be down on their feet.

to fix - have players look over top of their stick

3 - players will push too far back behind them

to fix - have players think about pushing outside of their stick.  Their thought should be to increaset the time for the contact between the blade and the ice.

Players should use this drill slowly to maximze extension and location while keeping a good spine angle to increase balance.

A good "cue" for the coach is to say to the players "I should see the logo on your jersey." if players are leaning too far forward you will not be able to do that.
