Having multiple players active in each repetition helps keep them engaged. This drill has 4 of the 6 defensemen active per rep. The drill can be continuous and have flow and offers opportunities for different variations. Add 1-2 players to create pressure.
Scanning before retrieval is critical. D1 (first on the puck) needs to know what type of pressure he has as well as what support/options he has well before he gets to the puck. Work on deception tactics here!
D2 must stay in the net-front support position until D1 has possession or there is perceived possession before he moves to the weak-side lateral support position. D2 must communicate!
Hold the players accountable for communicating and well-executed passes. We simulate DZ at first and then the pass from D2 to the blue line simulates OZ. Work on lookoffs and fakes as they can and will move defenders' toes and sticks. This creates a little space and better passing lanes and can give teammates a bit more time.
Be creative with the drill and challenge the players!
