Contracting The Ice Surface Defending The Neutral Zone

One of the principles of Total Hockey is creating a smaller area of the ice surface to defend. Whether you are forechecking in the offensive zone or the neutral zone or pressuring the puck in the defensive zone the goal is to push the puck and the play to the area outside the dots to defend middle ice and create a smaller area of the ice to defend in the process. As a unit you stay connected as a group defending.

In the video clip shared here you see Total Hockey being played by the Florida Panthers. As a unit of FIVE they pressure the puck in middle ice as a group with inside out control to create a smaller area to defend in middle ice. The turnover results in a quick offensive attack with the LEAFS caught as a unit on the wrong side of the puck. Florida defenders are connected as a collective unit with body and stick position on the offensive unit they are defending to force the turnover to transition to attacking with the puck.

The video reveals the purposeful execution of the NZ FORECHECK to apply the concept of Total Hockey in the neutral zone defending middle ice and entrance into the Florida zone.

The LEAFS are disconnected as a unit which results in them being unable to retain puck possession and control. The goal of the attack rush offence is to get through the neutral zone with speed and puck control. When defenders take away the carry option or the attack rush play you get the puck deep and retrieve the puck to set up in the offensive zone.
