Coaching Podcast - From Systems to Interactions: Coaching Hockey in a Nonlinear World
By Coach Barry Jones | IIHF Level 3 High Performance | USA Hockey Level 3 Performance
I recently had the opportunity to join the Hockey IQ Podcast to talk about nonlinear coaching and ecological dynamics in ice hockey.
The conversation wasn’t about abandoning structure. It was about designing it differently.
We explored:
• Why representative training environments matter
• Small area games as a vehicle for perception–action coupling
• Constraint manipulation as a coaching skill
• The difference between rehearsal and learning
• How hockey IQ emerges from interaction, not instruction
In long seasons and high-pressure environments, players don’t rise to the level of our drills. They adapt to the problems we consistently present.
If we want adaptable athletes, we have to design adaptable environments.
Appreciate the platform and the conversation. Always grateful to be part of a coaching community willing to question assumptions.
